Blinded by the bright: How species‐poor habitats contribute to regional biodiversity across a tropical seascape

چکیده
Aim Conservation efforts have traditionally addressed the threat of biodiversity loss by prioritizing regions and habitats with high endemic species richness. However, species-poor often harbour distinct, valuable and/or functionally unique that contribute to regional diversity. In tropical marine realm, ‘mangrove-seagrass-coral reef continuum’ has dominated both scientific literature spatial planning. Bare sediment are also part this continuum comprise majority bottom area, as they do in most worldwide, but understudied rarely considered conservation. To address information gap, we partition relative contributions five coastal mosaic (forereefs, patch reefs, seagrass, mangroves bare sand) fish diversity across a seascape. Location Carrie Bow Cay, Belize Barrier Reef. Methods Using diver visual censuses, assessed community composition at three replicate sites from each annually for 5 years. We then partitioned into within (α) between (β) habitat contributions, further β-diversity components attributed replacement richness difference. Finally, determined local (LCBD) identified key individual behind these contributions. Main Results Tropical sand flats contributed uniquely disproportionately diversity, despite having fewest overall. Sand had higher-than-expected highest percentage not found other habitats. Conclusions Our results demonstrate previously relatively assemblage compared nearby Marine planning aimed maximizing preservation total (including species) tropics should consider

Habitat Configuration Alters Herbivory across the Tropical Seascape
There exists increasing evidence that top-down ecological processes, such as herbivory are key in controlling marine ecosystems and their community structure. Herbivory has the potential to be altered by numerous environmental and ecological factors that operate at a variety of temporal and spatial scales, one such spatial factor is the influence of the marine landscape. We know little about ho...
متن کاملthe present study is a survey os postmodern historical novel with respect to the voice of women. it argues how the recorded history is regulated by the rules of power and how women have been excluded from this discourse.ther study analysez angela carters nights at the circus as an example of postmodern historical novel to illustrate how this novel has questioned the historical narrative and how it has inserted women into history by breaking the rules of patriarchy.
the present thesis is a study of postmodern historical novel with respect to the voice of women. according to postmodern historiography, the established institution of history is one of the other manifestations of patriarchys power which has silenced women. the study analyzes angela carters nights at the circus as a postmodern historical novel which makes its female characters transgress the pat...

The importance of biodiversity for the integrated functioning of ecosystems remains unclear because most evidence comes from analyses of biodiversity's effect on individual functions. Here we show that the effects of biodiversity on ecosystem function become more important as more functions are considered. We present the first systematic investigation of biodiversity's effect on ecosystem multi...
متن کاملIsolation by resistance across a complex coral reef seascape.
A detailed understanding of the genetic structure of populations and an accurate interpretation of processes driving contemporary patterns of gene flow are fundamental to successful spatial conservation management. The field of seascape genetics seeks to incorporate environmental variables and processes into analyses of population genetic data to improve our understanding of forces driving gene...
